The Great Concealer Quest: Three Contenders, One Bright-Eyed Winner

Note: While this is a straightforward product comparison, it’s part of an ongoing exploration into how well beauty products live up to their promises — and how they align with cleaner, more transparent standards.

The One Makeup Item I’d Take to a Desert Island

Desert island essential? Under-eye concealer. No matter the occasion (or the island climate), I like to look rested even in the middle of nowhere.

When someone on Instagram recommended Trish McEvoy’s Instant Eye Lift, described as a “multi-tasking transformer” that promises to banish under-eye darkness for a “dramatically lifted effect,” I couldn’t wait to try it. Unfortunately, I won’t be purchasing that particular Trish McEvoy product again.

First off, the price—$46—felt steep for how quickly it ran out. The tube seemed half full from the start. While it’s marketed as a multitasking product, the website also suggests wearing it under concealer, which kind of defeats the purpose. Did it brighten my under-eyes? Slightly. But it seemed to absorb into my skin quickly, and I didn’t see the dramatic lift I was hoping for.

Next up: KOSAS Revealer Concealer ($32). I had high hopes, especially since it’s a clean, vegan brand and I’ve enjoyed their lip products. Sadly, this one’s a miss for me. It has a slight scent—not exactly unpleasant, but noticeable enough that I was aware of it each time I applied it. While I don’t expect or want fragrance in my concealer, ideally, I shouldn’t be able to smell it at all. As for performance, it didn’t brighten enough to make up for that distraction. The “dramatic lift” I’m always chasing? Still elusive.

And then came the surprise: Tarte Creaseless Creamy Concealer. I picked up a travel size for $15 after seeing it rated #1 on their website, and I’m not surprised. It’s creamy, doesn’t crease, and actually delivers on brightness. Tarte’s clean, vegan positioning also resonates with me—and the price point makes it even better. Out of the three, this one’s the clear winner. My under-eyes looked brighter, more awake, and dare I say, a little bit lifted.
